--ANSWER--          Ice has small       holes       which       are       filled       with       air       (      and       as       the       air       covers       more       space       and       as       it       has             covers       more       volu      me       and       has       less       density      )             ,             the       density             of       ice       decreases       and       being             a       solid      ,             it       floats       on       water.

Thus   the volume of ice is greater than water  .     Hence,     the density of ice is less than of water  .     A   substance with low density than water can float on it  .
