   Let, Peter’s age = x

   then, John’s age = x+6

   One year ago, Peter’s age was (x-1)

   and John’s age was

   =3(x-1) ,which is equal to (x+6)-1

   or, 3x-3=x+5

   or, 3x-x= 5+3

   or, 2x= 8

   or, x=4

   hence, John’s present age is x+6 = 4+6=10 years

   and Peter’s present age is = x = 4 years
