1. x²-4x-5=0

   given value of x=1,-1

   when x=1

   (1)² -4×1 -5 = 1 – 4 – 5 = -8 does not satisfied the given condition x²-4x-5=0

   when x= -1

   (-1)²-4 × (-1) -5= 1 +4-5= 0 satisfied the given condition x²-4x-5 = 0

   Therefore x=-1 is the only root of given equation
