  1. Answer:

    Two paths each 2 m wide run across the middle of a

    rectangular field. If the area of cross path is 196 m2 and its

    length is 60 m, find its breadth.

  2. Step-by-step explanation:

    Here,

    firstly note that, when these two paths cross each other

    a square is formed in the middle of side 2m, same as the width of the path.

    Area of that square= s²= (2m)²= 4m²

    Now while taking the length of these two path

    we must subtract the portion the square covers that’s= 2m from length and breadth

    in the first path

    w=2m

    length = 60m

    after deducting = 60m-2m= 58m

    The area of the first path= l×b=2m×58m=116m²

    Now on the second path

    w= 2m

    b= x

    after deducting = x-2m

    area= 2m(x-2m)

    according to the question, the area of these two path

    = 196m²

    But we know that the area of the square is also included

    Therefore,

    116m²+2m(x-2m)+4m²= 196m²

    120m²+2m(x)-4m²= 196m²

    2m(x)= 196m²-116m²

    x= 80m²/2m= 40m
