   Age of the son = x – 5

   Age of the father = 7 (x – 5)

   Present ages:

   7 (x – 5) = – (y – 5)

   7x – 35 = 4x – 5

   7x – 4x = 35 – 5

   3x = 30

   x = 10

   Therefore:

   The age of the son = x = 10 years

   The age of the father = 4x = 40 years
